Andrea Maynard —known in the art world as Priscilla Maynard — is one of the foremost sumi-e artists in the Pacific Northwest. (Sumi-e is the art of painting wtih oriental brush and ink on rice paper.)

Andrea puts it this way: " Listening with the inner ear....paying attention to what something I see out there is telling me about itself, whether it be a tree, an ostrich, a beet, or a broom. That is what I do when I paint. Then I let the painting unfold before me. I have to be purely aware and open to the dance of the brush in painting with sumi.

"Technically, it all has to do with the reaction of the ink, the water, pressure and slant of the brush, the absorbancy of the rice paper. Beyond that, I must also be aware of the white spaces I am creating between the strokes of black ink. But most of all, I want to make sense of the inner spirit of whatever I paint."

Andrea received her MFA from the University of Iowa. She exhibits her paintings frequently and has won awards in major juried competitions, including exhibitions in Japan. She has been president of the Puget Sound Sumi Artists, the Northwest Watercolor Society, and the Women Painters of Washington. She teaches sumi painting at the community college plus private classes and workshops. Andrea is currently represented by the Foster/White Gallery in Seattle, Washington. Her work is in private collections around the United States.
