Beginning the Millenium in Cilandak:
A SICA PHOTO ALBUM

Tropical Retreats at Wisma Subud

Rumah Hermina (above)
Rumah Hartati (left)

Ever so creatively designed to fit into small spaces on the Subud compound, these two homes feel so spacious! Open. airy, and inviting, they use the light, lush greenery, natural woods, tiles, stones, and carvings of Indonesia, Delightful retreats from Jakarta indeed.

The table above is set for buka puasa — the time to break the fast in the month of Ramadan.

'The way you set the table,' Bapak reminded us, 'is also culture.'

Ahhhh.

Utami Geiger's Jewellery Workshop (below)

Utami, Mansur and Vivianna set this up. The artisans are working in silver and gold.

Pak Wishnu, Utami's father, started this compound years back with nothing. He used to fix up old cars and sell them, and did a lot of that right here. Little by little, the car sales allowed him to build here, add on there, and now it's a crazy wonderful workshop amd studio which employs a number of artisans and silver smiths — all trained by Vivianna Bülow-Hübe and Mansur Geiger. There's Utami bottom right.

Concert pianist, Ary Sutedja — who also happens to bn Mrs. Mikhail David — organized a concert for all the visitors at the home of Maryam David in Pamulang. Oliver Halviala, a concert violinist who happened to be at Wisma Subud, naturally became part of the plan. What a wonderful plan! What a lovely evening!

(Some people seem to have a feel for photo ops! — Artists of course!)

The salon concert led to a recital in Jakarta's prestigious Dutch Cultural Center, Erasmus Huis. The concert was also benefit for Susila Dharma Indonesia..

(Ah well, SICA can be the beneficiary next time! —ed.)

Ari, by the way, is a central creative visionary and powerhouse behind the upcoming Festival, JakArt@2001 as well as Pro Seni, the nonprofit arts organization set up to run the Festival. SICA Chair, Bachtiar Lorot tells about his meetings with the Festival team in the SICA NEWS section. And he's excited! And there's more about the Festival and how you can be a part of it in the Music and Performing Arts section of Inspire too! Check it out!
